    This talk discusses the consequences of reliance on the statistical significance level (viz. the p value), which tends to be the only focus in quantitative studies subscribing to the “old statistics” paradigm. It advocates for using measures of effect size, which is deemed much more important than p in the “new statistics” paradigm. With examples from published research employing the “Top Five” statistical methods (viz. t-test, ANOVA, correlation, chi-square test, and regression), this talk illustrates how effect sizes can be effectively used; additionally, it illustrates the benefits and pitfalls concerning the use of hierarchical regression, which is most instrumental in ascertaining the unique contribution of each predictor (independent variable) to the dependent variable, as this variant of regression is precited to “be used more frequently” in future L2 research.
